HIDDEN GOLD 1940 (PLATINUM)

More fun with Hopalong Cassidy.

This fast movie little outing finds Hoppy William Boyd) and Lucky Jenkins (Russell Hayden) investigating a series of stage hold ups. A man named Colby (Minor Watson) has been the victim of these gold thefts.

Hoppy suspects that it's actually Colby himself setting up the robberies. When a friend of Hoppy's named Speedy (Britt Wood) strikes gold Hoppy borrows it and sets up a trap for the mysterious criminals.

He announces another gold shipment is coming thru and this sets up a rather great climax.

Lesley Selander directed and the rest of the great cast includes Ruth Rogers, Roy Barcroft and Eddie Dean. This is a fun and fast pace little film from Paramount. A must for B western fans.

DOCTOR CYCLOPS 1940 (KINO) BLU-RAY

One of the most unique films ever made.

Albert Dekker stars as a scientist who has discovered radiation that can shrink people. He sends for a few scientists to verify his findings and after a 10,000 mile trip he dismisses them in a matter of minutes after they have served their purpose.

This doesn't sit well with any of them and they refuse to leave. Dr. Thorkel tricks the party, including his servant Pedro, into strpping into a room and them locks them in. He uses his invention and shrinks them to one fifth their original height.

Thorkel keeps the around as it is impossible for them to escape, and he likes making their lives miserable. He discovers that they are again starting to grow and figures he has to kill them.

This is a beautiful Technicolor film made even better by the 4k update from Kino. I had been waiting to see this for a while and then with so much going on I simply forgot it was released.

A few weeks ago my wife and I were on a small buying trip and she discovered this in a store and she brought it over and said' You interested?" My jaw hit the floor. Ginger had found a gem hidden in the back of a shelf.

I highly recommend this sci-fi gem from 1940. It's unique, fun and has some great special effects for the time. The rest of the cast includes Janie Logan, Thomas Culley, Charles Halton and Victor Kilian.

FORTY THIEVES 1944 (PLATINUM)

A great entry in the Hopalong Cassidy series.

As I watched this film I couldn't help but see the 2020 election.

Hoppy (William Boyd) is a sheriff in a small western town and he's up for re-election. Into town rides Tad Hammond (Douglass Dumbbrille) whom Hoppy had arrested and had jailed. He's now out on parole.

Hammond gets all of the badmen Hoppy has run out of town and has them band together to stop farmers from voting so they can stuff the ballot box with votes for a gutless wonder named Jerry Doyle (Kirk Alyn).

They actually manage to throw the election so Hoppy, along with California Carlson (Andy Clyde) and Jimmy Rogers, plan to report the crooked election to the Governor. Helping them is a young woman named Kathryn reynolds (Louise Currie).

Everything comes to a head when Hoppy battles Tad on a swinging bridge. This scene alone is worth the price of admission. It's very well handled and quite shocking for a Hopalong Cassidy film.

The rest of the cast includes Glenn Strange, Herbert Rawlinson, Robert Frazer and Bob Kortman.

HORRORS OF MALFORMED MEN 1968 (SINISTER CINEMA)

This is without a doubt the most bizarre film I have ever seen.

This movie was released in Japan on Halloween in 1969 and that was a perfect time to view this. The movie opens in an asylum where a man is in a cell with about 20 japanese women who are insane and some pretty wild shit goes on.

Soon we learn the man is not mad, but has no idea why he is there. He manages to escape in order to find his real identity and who put him in the asylum.

He soon winds up on an island inhabited by a VERY MAD scientist who has been busy creating malformed men and other bizarre creatures. This leads to only more mystery until it's discovered that the madman is actually the mans father.

I have seen weird movies before, but this really takes the cake. My wife Ginger also said it was the most bizarre thing she has ever seen. There are images in this film that will stay with you a VERY long time.

I would really reccommend this film for any horror fan because it's something very different. The print from Sinister is beautiful color, widescreen and subtitled.

Check it out for a once in a lifetime experience.

BLACK ANGEL 1946 (ARROW) BLU-RAY

This is a fine and somewhat neglected fim noir.

A female singer named Mavis Marlowe (Constance Dowling) is seeing several men and while her husband pines to have her back. Her husband Martin (Dan Duryea) is an alcoholic and is usually in a state of drunken stupor.

One night Mavis is murdered and the police arrest a man named Kirk Bennett (John Phillips) who happened to find her body and never called the police, but was seen leaving by Mavis' housekeeper.

Kirk's wife Catherine (June Vincent) does not believe her husband is a killer and she enlists the aid of Martin to help her prove it. They form a musical duo while working undercover in a nightclub owned by a shady character named Marko (Peter Lorre).

They slowly put together a plan, but are soon derailed by Marko and the police. It's a race against time as Kirk is to face execution for the murder.

The real killer is identified and it was quite a good little twist. This is a very dark film noir directed by Roy William Neill who also helmed the Sherlock Holmes films for Universal.

My wife found this Blu-ray for me and it's a great film, and yes she and I watched it together and she loved it. No film noir fan should miss it. The rest of the cast includes Broderick Crawford, Wallace Ford and Hobart Cavanaugh.

GHOST'S ROYALTY 1965 (SINISTER CINEMA)

This is a very bizarre and well made film that seems to be forgotten today.

A young man named Fanning (Stephane Fey) is out for a walk in 1850's Massachusetts and stumbles upon an old and abandoned house.

All of the locals believe it's haunted and Fanning continues to investigate until he discovers it's owned by a man named Captain Diamond (Francois Vibert).

He befirends the lonely man who tells him that he visits the house 4 times a year to collect money. He tells Fanning that he killed his daughter years ago with his cruel words and that her ghost lives in the house, and that it pays him rent to stay there and keep people away.

Fanning enters the house and man is it creepy. The ghost, dressed all in black makes him leave. When Diamond gets too sick to collect the money he asks Fanning to do it, which he does, and there lies the interesting twist this film takes.

I won't give it away, but it's very, very downbeat. The stark black and white photography is beautifully shot and the film is skillfully directed by Robert Enrico who also gave us "An Occurance At Owl Creek Bridge.

It's a French film with English subtitles and it really delivers the goods. I don't understand why this film has been neglected by horror fans, but I hope it gets discovered again soon. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by bth my wife and I.

This film is so rare I couldn't even find a picture for this review.

YOUNG HANNAH QUEEN OF THE VAMPIRES 1972 (SINISTER CINEMA)

It's been a long time since I saw this film.

Andrew Prine stars as a young man who comes to a small island to investigate the mysterious death of his father.

Upon arriving he finds the locals to be very rude when they do not speak to him or offer directions to the local church. He is them met by Peter (Mark Damon) who offers him a place to stay as well as the help he needs getting his fathers body out from underneath a huge tomb.

Prine's character of Chris Bolton sets up a plan to get the body out but the locals, including Peter's sister Mary (Patty Sheppard) are against it because they believe that the tomb belongs to a 700 year old female vampire named Hannah.

Chris manages to get help to lift the lid off of the tomb and then get the tomb itself off of the body of his father. Doing this however actually does bring Hannah back to life and off she goes in search of blood.

Chris discovers that this was a set up by Peter all the time as he wants immortality. Now Chris has to find a way to put the sexy Hannah (Teresa Gimpera) back in her grave.

There are a lot of great scenes in this film, especially the ending involving Hannah, some villagers and a beach. The performances are all very good and it was nice to see an uncut print of the film after all the copies I have gone thru.

This has been available on many labels over the years on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. I find this print from Sinister very serviceable and good enough. A good, and often overlooked horror film.

FOOL'S GOLD 1946 (PLATINUM)

Good and entertaining entry in the Hopalong Cassidy series.

This is a pretty straight forward tale.

The son of an army friend is getting ready to join an outlaw gang and Hoppy is enlisted to stop him before it's too late. Hoppy takes along California (Andy Clyde) and Lucky (Rand Brooks) to help him.

They manage to stop the young man and the also arrest all the members of the outlaw gang. It's nice to see Jane Randolph in this film as she is one of my favorites from the period.

The cast is rounded out by Robert Emmett Keane, Steve Barclay and Harry Cording. A good bet for Hoppy fans.

DARK PLACES 1974 (SINISTER CINEMA)

A VERY underrated thriller.

A dying man named Andrew Marr (Robert Hardy) tells a man who takes care of his estate that money is hidden in the walls of his mansion. He tells him this on his death bed.

The man named Edward Foster (Robert Hardy) immediately goes to the house and before too long is met by Dr. Ian Mandeville (Christopher Lee) and his sexy sister Sarah (Joan Collins).

Sarah offers to help Edward clean up the house and slowly seduces him. You see, Ian and Sarah also want the money and they will stop at nothing to get it. However everyone soon learns that the house is haunted.

Edward slowly looses his sanity and starts "becoming" Andrew Marr once again. The ghosts drive him to the brink as he soon becomes a raving madman who kills anyone who gets in his way. This bodes badly for both Ian and Sarah.

This is a great little thriller that really isn't too well known and that's a shame. Lee is perfect in his role and Hardy steals the show as the elderly Marr who dies at the beginning of the film and the lunatic Foster at the end.

Joan Collins is...well...Joan Collins. A sexy woman who will stop at nothing to get money. Herbert Lom also stars in this unique thriller from director Don Sharp as does Jean Marsh.

I watched this with my wife and she guessed many of the plot points and she actually knew what would happen at the conclusion. I was impressed with that. She does like these kinds of films a much as I do.

The print is beautiful and widescreen. If you haven't seen this I suggest you seek it out and have a good time with it.

RIP TEMPEST STORM 1928-2021

The Burlesque queen has died.

I was first introduced to Tempest thru a movie called MUNDO DEPRAVADOS and then thru numerous documentaries about her life as well as film makers of the 60's and 70's.

Storm, whose real name was Annie Banks was a staple at the El Ray Berlesk in Oakland, California and her career was boosted in the 1940's and 50's with the help of filmmaker Russ Meyer.

Tempest had ample endowments and was never ashamed of that. It made her famous. She appeared in a few other films including PARIS AT MIDNIGHT and PARIS TOPLESS.

She passed away in Las Vegas on April 20th, 2021 at the age of 93. Her passing marks the end of the Burlesque Queens and a time that is sadly no more.

RIP MONTE HELLMAN 1929-2021

The acclaimed director has passed away.

Hellman directed 21 films in his career and they include some of the best titles around, especially for cult movie fans.

Some of his titles include his debut film BEAST FROM HAUNTED CAVE as well as TWO LANE BLACKTOP, COCKFIGHTER, THE TERROR, RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND, THE SHOOTING and more.

It was Hellman's hooking up with Roger Corman that really launched his career and his work will live on for a very long time.

Hellman passed away on April 20th, 2021 at the age of 91.

SO SWEET SO PERVERSE 1969 (TUBI)

I enjoyed this bizarre film from Umberto Lenzi.

Jean-Louis Trintignant stars as Jean Reynaud, a man who just can't get enough in life that excites him.

His beautiful wife Danielle (Erika Blanc) is used to his infedelity, but also still loves him. When a mysterious new neighbor moves into the upstairs apartment, Jean is curious about the noises he hears and decides to investigate.

He discovers a beautiful blonde named Nicole (Carroll Baker) who seems to fear her boyfriend Klaus (Horst Frank). Jean finds that Nicole excites him and starts an affair with her.

Soon he finds his life in danger from Klaus, but it is no for the reasons he thinks it is. This is the Italian version of "Diabolique" but with a few plot differences.

It's a good film from the late 60's and the plot moves along well. If you're a Euro babes fan like I am you get the above mentioned beauties as well as Helga Line who has a small but memorable role. The four women make this film well worth watching.

60's colors, fashions and cars made me long for the good old days. Anyway, this is a good bet for mystery fans and it has a rather downbeat ending for every character.

DAUGHTER OF HORROR 1955 (SINISTER CINEMA)

I really like this film.

Yes, I have written about this before, but it has been a while and I obtained this DVD from Sinister Cinema to watch with my wife.

This is also known as DEMENTIA and is one of the strangest films I have ever seen. Adrienne Barrett stars as a nameless woman who wakes up in a dirty hotel room after having a nightmare.

She leaves the room and is taken by a fat man who has a lot of money. She kills him when he makes advances at her by pushing him out his 6th floor hotel window. She then cuts off his hand to get back the necklace he tore from her as he fell.

There are just so many bizarre things in this film. Weird set pieces such as the woman being taken by a masked man to a cemetery and shown how she has become insane. That scene always impresses me, and it also impressed my wife.

There is no dialogue in the film except for the narrator. It's a nightmare experience from the insane point of view and it qorks on every level. Bruno Ve Sota stars as the fat rich man and he also co-produced this little gem.

I'm sure most of you reading this have seen the film. It's a must see and my wife had never seen it and was very impressed. There is no other movie like this and never will be. Yes. this is the movie that is playing at the theater in the 1958 version of "The Blob".

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

LADY VAMPIRE 1959 (SINISTER CINEMA)

WOW what a movie!!

This film opens with a woman who has been missing for 20 years returning to her home with no idea where she has been, but she hasn't aged at all.

A portrait of her has been discovered in a museum at the same time and it turns out the painter of the picture is a dapper man who also happens to be a cursed vampire.

There are a lot of interesting things in this story including the fact that moonlight causes the man to changed into a long toothed vampire that is compelled to drink blood and the scenes where he is attacking young women are very well done.

In a flashback we learn how he was cursed with immortality and why he is like he is. He can walk around in daylight and wears sunglasses.

This was Japans first horror film to take place in modern times and it really hits home. The story is very dark and forboding and it comes across well. The cast is first rate and make everything believable.

The print is beautiful black and white and widescreen, and yes, it does have subtitles. I can't recommend this enough for horror fans!! It's rare and unique.

DOOMED CARAVAN 1941 (PLATINUM)

William Boyd again stars as Hopalong Cassidy.

In this outing a woman by the name of Jane Travers (Minna Gombell) who operates a wagon line business, asks for Cassidy's help against a mysterious group that is trying to put her out of business any way possible.

Hoppy agrees to help her and he enlists the aid of Clifornia (Andy Clyde) and Lucky Jenkins (Russell Hayden). After the wagon train takes off it is attacked again, but the attack is stopped by Hoppy and his men.

They discover that two men, Stephen Wescott (Morris Ankrum) and Ed Martin (Trevor Bardette) are behind the operation and want the thriving business for their own.

Hoppy and his men must stop them before they can succeed. This is a great little western full of action, a little comedy and character actors like Bardette and Ankrum. Paramount released the film and it is well worth and western film fans time to check it out.

MAN ON THE PROWL 1957 (TUBI)

This popped up on my "Recommended" list on Tubi and I had to check it out.

What I discovered was a very twisted psycho shocker with a great cast. James Best does a great turn as Doug Gerhardt. a young man with a sick mind.

At the opening of the film we see him killing a woman because she refused his sexual advances. Later when he almost runs over Marian Wood (Mala Powers) and one of her sons while riding his mototcycle too fast, we see an even more psycho side of this guy.

He worms his way into Marian's life and whe her husband leaves on a business trip to San Francisco, Doug makes his move. The police are on Doug's trail and the head of the unti seeking him out is a nameless detective played by Ted de Corsia.

Best is excellent in this role and he usually played the country bumpkin or good guy in everything else I ever saw him in. The scenes where he is trying to force Marian to have sex with him or have her children killed is very tense indeed.

The print on Tubi had brand new credits added onto it as the originals must be lost and there was some footage missing. I do wish movies like this were better taken care of.

However, if you want you can indeed check this out. I enjoyed the hell out of it, and Mala is always one hot babe. The rest of the cast imcludes Jerry Paris, Vivi Janiss and the gorgeous Peggy Maley.
