Two more films from the Roger Corman cult classic collection from Shout factory make a very welcome appearance on DVD. Up From the Depth stars Sam Bottoms as a young man who finds himself fighting a mysterious and very large sea creature that has been awakened by an earthquake. Longtime Corman writer Chuck Griffith directed this interesting opus in the Philippines and it isn't too bad. I kinda like the monster and the story but I have to admit that the acting is sometimes very stiff and awkward. Still, there is fun to be had here.
Demon of Paradise has always been one of my favorite films. This stars Kathryn Witt as a scientist living on an island in Hawaii (actually the Philippines) who stumbles upon a mysterious ans ferocious monster stalking the islands looking for human food. This is one, if not the last of the rubber suited monster movies, and that alone is worth the price of this disc.
The monster looks cool and I grew up with man-in-suit monsters, so this really appeals to me. You can watch these as a grindhouse double feature with some cool trailers for upcoming Corman delights such as Caged Heat, Jackson County Jail, Firecracker and more. There are also trailers for the films themselves and several radio spots for Up From The Depths anda "making of" for Depths as well.
Highly recommended!!
