PUNISHMENT PARK 1971 (PROJECT X)

An absolute gem of a film that has been in relative obscurity for no good reason.

There are not many films like this one. Made in 1971 and now even more timely is this film from Peter Watkins about the US Military, Police and Government Officials herding up all of the people they call radicals and giving them a choice of spending 15 to 20 years in prison or 4 days in what is called Punishment Park.

All of the young people choose the Park, and find it isn't what it was said to be. I don't want to spoil it for people that haven't seen this film, but the officials and law enforcement lie.

This film is a really powerful one with a message that people should really listen to. With Obama in the White house, this is even more timely than when it was made 43 years ago. I grew up in the early 70's and saw a lot as a child, and now what I see happening with all the dissent and separation in America..well enough of my political rant.

Watkins makes the film into a pseudo documentary. There are no opening credits and you really feel you are watching a news program. The actors are not professionals and that makes it even more real.

This movie has become a cult favorite, but remains elusive. It is very controversial and anyone who sees it will agree. It will always evoke a different response from people. It should be required viewing for everyone. If you can find it, I Highly Recommend it.
