APE 1976 (KINO) BLU-RAY

Oh my God!

I hadn't seen this film for years, but have read a lot about it, and none of it good mind you.

I was super excited to see this coming to Blu-ray in both 2D and 3D versions. The movie looks as good as it is going to in any format.

The film opens with a 36 foot gorilla escaping from a toy boat and fighting a dead but very real baby shark in a bathtub that is supposed to resemble the ocean. Then the monster makes for land and starts terrorizing Korea.

Joanna Karns (aka Joanna De Varona) is an American movie actress in Seoul to shoot a movie. During one of the scenes she is scooped up by the big ape and carried away, much to the chagrin of her boyfriend and the US Military.

Both the Korean and US armies try and stop the monster from destroying the cardboard city of Seoul and other cities, but the Korean government wants the monkey alive, while a US, led by Col. Davis (Alex Nicol) wants him dead.

The effects are terrible and it seems like the film makers had no intention of doing better. The director is Paul Leder, and he is even in the film as a film director named Dino! This film was rushed into production to capitalize on the Dino DeLaurentis remake of King Kong. Oh brother.

This is the kind of slop that is essential to my Blu-ray collection. Nothing in the film works, but there is lovely Joanna Karns to look at and some great dialogue such as "Kill that hairy son of a bitch" or my fave "let's see him dance for his organ grinder now".

I mean you just can't go wrong with lines like that. I recommend this Blu-ray disc for every bad movie fan alive out there. This is a MUST have and one of the best releases of the year. Thanks Kino.
