HUNCHBACK OF THE MORGUE 1973 (SHOUT FACTORY) BLU-RAY

The second Paul Naschy collection starts out with a bang from Shout Factory.

First let me say that Shout makes it very clear they couldn't get the top of the line film elements from Spain, so they settled for the best they could find from their licensor, and they didn't do too bad of a job.

The picture is still better than anything else I have ever seen of the film. Naschy plays Gotho a hunchback who is in love with a very ill woman. When she dies he takes her body to an underground lair and promises to take care of her. Soon her body is eaten by rats in a scene that really creeps me out.

Gotho sets the rats on fire and as everyone knows, during that scene Naschy was actually bitten several times by the nasty little critters. One thing leads to another and soon Gotho is supplying a mad doctor with dead bodies for bizarre experiments involving a living organism he is growing.

One of the mosty twisted of all Naschy films, this one really goes in several bizarre directions at once and climaxes in a scene which reminded me of "Brain That Wouldn't Die" in several aspects.

There are a lot of familiar faces from the Euro horror genre in here including Vic Winner and a lot of Euro beauties including Rosanna Yanni.

This is a must for Naschy fans and everyone else who loves horror. There are some scenes in the film that are really cruel including a bunch of kids throwing rocks at Gotho and striking him in the head and then laughing about it.

This is part of Shout's Paul Naschy Collection 2 and a very welcome addition to Blu-ray. The other four films in the collection will be reviewed here in the coming days.
