FEAR 1946 (TUBI)

Very strange film indeed.

A young medical student named Larry Crain (Peter Cookson) is hungry, tired and way behind in his rent and other bills. He sells things to a college professor who is a loan shark.

Crain murder Prof. Stanley (Francis Pierlot) but because of unforseen circumstances he neglects to take a huge wad of cash. Police Capt. Burke (Warren William) and Detective Shaefer (Nestor Paiva) investigate the murder.

Burke suspects Crain as does Shaefer, but there is no evidence to prove he did it. Burke works on Crain slowly in order to make him confess. Meanwhile a story Crain wrote for a magazine is published and he receives 1000 dollars. Crain also tries romancing a beautiful woman named Eileen (Anne Gwynne).

The net gets tighter and tighter around Crain until.....

I can't give away the ending to this film. I can tell you this is an American version of the Dostoevsky story "Crime and Punishment" and it works very well. The ending really had me going "whoa" for a minute.

While watching this film my wife said "look...there is the Night Stalker guy" and sure enough there was Darren McGavin in a small role as a blonde college student. I couldn't believe it! McGavin was 23 when he appeared in this film and I didn't even recognise him.

This is an enjoyable little film running a slight 68 minutes. It never lets up and it's got a very good story and the actors do very well with the material. I'm glad I stumbled on this. I enjoyed it a hell of a lot. RECOMMENDED!!
