RAMBLINGS...

To stream or not to stream...that is the question.

Much like the time when VHS was phased out for DVD and then DVD for Blu-ray, a huge question remains. There are no clear answers simply because everyone has opinions and things they like.

A few years ago I was talking to a friend and I said I probably would never stream movies because I am one of those people who actually like to have physical media in his hands. Well times have changed.

In 2019 I streamed my first movies on Amazon and left it at that. Then in April of 2020 I got my first Smart TV and it really opened a new world up for me. Now I admit I stream quite a bit. However that has not really diminished my love for owning a DVD or Blu-ray.

Most of the movies I have or had on DVD are now available thru streaming services. These include such services as NETFLIX, TUBI, ROKU and hundreds more I have on my TV. I am not a big fan of NETFLIX, but I'll touch on that later. A lot of these services are pretty good and they do run commercials, some more than others which is a deal breaker for me.

A few ads are fine as these movies must be paid for, but some services run ads every 5 minutes, and if they do that I cut them off. Most are legit services, but every once in a while I stumble upon a bootleg site, but believe me, that is a rare thing and I don't condone it.

Since I stream so much I am selling about 85% of my DVD and Blu-ray collection, but I think that will only make room for more...lol...it never ends. Streaming has a LOT of advantages such as space saving and even the quality of most are far superior to the DVD, but hell, I'll watch a movie that looks shitty if it's something I really want to see.

I still have problems with streaming and here are a few. I avoid NETFLIX most of the time because they have dropped a LOT of movies in favor of self produced series and then they constantly raise their rates to pay for these shows. No thank you. I also abhor YouTube as a streaming service. Why? Because of the stolen material that is placed on there by people who just don't care about copyrights. Too damn many people in this country feel that if the movie is old, they need not pay for it because the makers have already made all their money. That makes about as much sense as me saying Joe Biden is my President. NOT A CHANCE.

YouTube is fine for watching clips, home made material, but not for stolen material, and there is a lot of it. I have even had people tell me I should upload my movies on there. NOPE..YOU WANT YOU PAY.

The other thing that bothers me about streaming is the editing that goes on. The companies can control everything you see and hear with streaming. There are several TV shows that have been turned out on DVD in complete editions, however when they stream they are either edited or banned all together. It's sad that people aren't even aware this is going on, but that is one of the dangers of streaming that I can do without.

I encourage everyone to keep hold of some physical media because a complete switch isn't prudent. I hope that streaming doesn't become the ONLY way people view things because that gives the PC crowd a chance for control.

Well there is my small opinion on the current streaming world, and while people don't have to agree with me I do hope you'll read this with an open mind. Good streaming out there.

DEATH DIMENSION 1976 (TUBI)

An Al Adamson film I had never seen.

This is one bizarre film. Harold Sakata stars as Santo "The Pig" Massino, a master criminal who wants the plans to a newly developed freezing weapon that he will then sell to the highest bidder.

But to obtain the information he has to capture a woman named Felicia (Patch Mackenzie) who has a chip planted under her scalp with all the needed information.

Enter Lt. Ash (Jim Kelly) who is assigned to find Felicia and protect her. There are a lot of endless chases and lame fight scenes as Ash is always one step behind Massino.

When Massino finally captures Felicia he threatens her with torture involving a snapping turtle which has to be seen to be believed, and oh my God the dialogue during these scene is priceless. I'm not going to give it away, but it is one of a kind indeed.

Aldo Ray shows up in a pretty much wasted role and Sakata's voice was dubbed by James Hong and it was interesting to see George Lazenby in the role of Capt. Gallagher who turns out to be a flunkie for Massino.

Once again Adamson offers a little something for everyone in a film that really offers nothing. Beautiful women, car chases and two James Bond film alumni. It makes for a good time waster if you have nothing better to do.

PANTHER SQUAD 1984 (TUBI)

Took me forever to see this film.

This is a very strange film indeed.

An organization calling itself "Space Clean" has set up shop and is dedicated to stopping the exploration of space by any country in the world, Why? Well that isn't made too clear in the film.

The USA calls on the Panther Squad to clean up the mess. The Panther Squad is a group of scantily clad women led by a leather clad woman named Ilona played by the sumptuous Sybil Danning.

She is assisted by Frank Bramble (Jack Taylor) who really doesn't do anything in the film but look bored and I am assuming this is how his character is supposed to be...at least I hope so. The fight scenes are some of the worst I have ever seen, especially when they women easily knock out an entire army with what looks to be little love tapes on the back of the neck.

You never want to take films like this very serious and that is a good thing as this film couldn't be taken on a serious note if it tried. The women all look very good and Sybil ALWAYS looks good, especially in leather, but the movie does drag a bit and comes to what seems like a very hurried conclusion.

It's not a bad time waster at 77 minutes and if you like Sybil you'll want to check it out anyway.

PENINSULA 2020 (WELL GO USA)

This is the follow up to "Train To Busan".

It is nowhere near as good as the first film, and I compare this to the first movie like I compare "Day Of The Dead" to "Night Of The Living Dead". In other words an interesting film, but it lacks everything else the original had.

This takes place 4 years after the original zombie outbreak. All of South Korea has been infected with zombies and a few people are chosen to go back into Korea to recover a truck loaded with stolen money.

This sets the stage for some very well done action sequences and a lot of great zombie action. One of the survivors of the group is taken hostage by a band of rebels who amuse themselves by staging cage fights between captives and zombies.

This harkened me back to "Escape From New York" in a way. Soon the captive mans brother comes looking for him and he attempts rescue in a great set piece involving humans and zombies. Then he must also help a small band of survivors get out of the infected area as well.

It's not a bad film, but it really is no relation top the earlier hit. The problem with so many of these kinds of films is that if the first one is an unexpected box office hit, then people seem to think they can follow it up with something just as good. 9 times out of 10 thery are wrong.

If you're a fan of the first film, then by all means see this one. I'm not saying it's not a good film, but it ain't no "Train To Busan" by any means.

STORIES OF THE CENTURY 1954-1955 (ECHO BRIDGE)

This is such a great series and not too much is ever written about it.

This series ran from 1954 until 1955 and starred Jim Davis as Matt Clark who is a railroad detective in the old west.

Each week Matt would be investigating another crime against the railroad and it would often pit him against one of the many notorious outlaws of the time. I found several episodes of this to watch on a disc containing western TV shows and found every one of them to be very entertaining.

These are not presented here in episodic order, but in the order in which I saw them on the disc.

DOC HOLLIDAY 3/25/1954... Matt and his assistant Frankie (Mary Castle) head to Tombstone to find Doc Holliday (Kim Spalding) whom they suspect of working with the Clanton gang.

GERONIMO 2/14/54... Matt and Frankie go after Geronimo (Chief Yowlachie) who has helped steal valuable things from a railroad freight yard.

BLACK JACK KETCHUM 6/24/54... Matt and Frankie sreach for the notorious outlaw wanted in two states for murder so they can save the life of an innocent man. Jack Elam stars as Ketchum.

JOHNNY RINGO 3/11/54... Matt tracks Johnny Ringo (Donald Curtis) down for a desert showdown.

JACK SLADE 3/4/55...Matt and his assistane Margaret (Kristine Miller) search for Jack Slade who has pulled off a $25,000 railroad robbery. Gregg Palmer stars as Slade.

BELLE STARR 1/23/54... The very first episode of this series stars Marie Windsor as Belle Starr who has stolen a herd of Cattle from the US Cavalry. Windsor is perfect for this kind of role.

TIBURCIO VASQUEZ 4/23/54...After his sister is killed by a white man, Vasquez vows vengeance on every gringo, and Matt Clark must stop him. This is a very well made episode which really stands out. Anthony Caruso is excellent as Vasquez.

BEN THOMPSON 7/8/54...Matt and Frankie travel to Austin, Texas to investigate a criminal with a long list of crimes.

BURT ALVORD 1/2/55...Matt and Margaret investigate stolen money from the railroad and then some dynamiter is also stolen.

QUANTRILL AND HIS RAIDERS 2/21/54...Matt and Frankie are asked to infiltrate Quantrill and his raiders> They do, but are unable to prevent to massacre at Lawrence, Kansas. Bruce Bennett is perfect as Quantrill.

BLACK BART 5/6/54... Arthur Space stars as Black Bart whom Matt and Frankie are searching for inconnection with numerous train robberies.

HARRY TRACY 5/27/54... Matt and Frankie hunt down Harry Tracy (Steve Brodie) after he steals a train.

APACHE KID 1/9/55...Matt and Margaret hunt the dangerous Apache Kid (Kenneth Alton) after he commits a murder and kidnaps a young woman.

CATTLE KATE 2/28/54... Jean Parker stars as Ella Watson AKA Cattle Kate. Matt and Frankie travel to Sweetwater, Wyoming to stop Kate and her lover, Jim Averell (Jim Seay) from stealing more cattle.

CLAY ALLISON 7/15/54... Fankie is shot during a robbery and Matt arrests Clay Allison (Jack kelly). One of the best episodes of the series.

LITTLE BRITCHES 6/17/54... A young woman meets up with an outlaw played by James Best and soon Matt is investigating.

THE YOUNGER BROTHERS 4/2/54... Matt and Frankie work to prevent the Younger Brothers from pulling off a huge robbery in Minnesota.

TOM BELL 1/16/55... Tom Bell kills a railroad employee and Matt Clark is sent in to investigate.

MILT SHARP 2/28/55... Matt and Margaret investigate the kidnapping of a banker from a stagecoach. Don Barry stars as Sharp.

Well, that's all of what I had on the disc and each episode is unique. It was the first western series to win an Emmy, and it's easy to see why. I hope I can get to see the rest of these sometime soon.

TOP 28 DVD AND BLU-RAY RELEASES FOR 2020 PART 3

Here we go with my Top Ten picks for the year 2020 on Blu-ray and DVD.

10. WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST (SHOUT FACTORY) BLU-RAY...This sequel to "Amazing Colossal Man" never looked better than in this great release. Sally Forrest stars in this winner.

09. EVIL SPAWN (RETROMEDIA) BLU-RAY...Suprise release of the horror film starring Bobbie Bresee as a young woman turned into a mutant by a mysterious beauty drug.

08. DAMGER DIABOLIK (SHOUT FACTORY) BLU RAY...Fantastic release of the great Euro spy film starring John Phillip Law and the ultra sexy Marissa Mell. One of the most requested release among fans.

07. SHIVERS (VESTRON) BLU-RAY...One of the best horror films ever made!! Sexual parasites invade an isolated apartment building near Montreal, Canada. Thanks to Vestron for finally bringing this out. Tons of extras on the disc.

06. DINOSAUR ISLAND (RETROMEDIA) BLU-RAY...Another surprise from Fred Olen Ray. A group of soldiers are stranded on an island inhabited by dinosaurs and sexy cave women.

05. X THE UNKNOWN (SHOUT FACTORY) BLU-RAY...This highest rated movie from Shout this year is one of my favorites. A radioactive mass causes havoc in Scotland in this Hammer classic that never looked better.

04. HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND (SEVERIN) BLU-RAY...Finally this movie has been given some attention. The quality is top notch and it contains both the Euro version and the US cut of the film. A true trash classic.

03. DEVIL'S HAND (SINISTER CINEMA) DVD...One of my favorite films of all time gets a great upgrade from Sinister and it looks great Linda Christian stars as a beautiful seductive witch that sets her sights on a man. Great music score.

02. LADYBUG LADYBUG (KINO) BLU-RAY...Another all time favorite finally gets a Blu-ray release. A group of school children and their teachers try to make their way to safety after news of an impending nuclear attack. I wish they could make movies as powerful as this today. MAGNIFICENT.

01. CURSE OF THE UNDEAD (KINO) BLU-RAY...I waited forever to see this Universal horror western come out and Kino made it possible!! Michael pate stars as a gunslinger who is also a vampire. This is a top ten all time favorite film of mine and it comes in as number one for the entire year.

Well, thats it. 2020 sucked as far as releases went and I have a bad feeling 2021 will as well, but we shall see. There are still some great films I am waiting for to see if they get a release.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

THE LONE RANGER 1949-1957 (ECHO BRIDGE)

Caught several of these episodes, and they never fail to bring back great memories.

I have loved this show since I was a kid and it will never change. Here is a quick rundown of the episodes I caught on this disc.

MESSAGE FROM ABE 2/7/57... James Griffith stars as Phil Beach, a reformed criminal who is accused of stealing an elderly man's gold. The Lone Ranger and Tonto must help him.

THE TENDERFEET 11/10/49... Two cowboys strike it rich in a silver mine and then are accused of murder. The Lone Ranger looks for the real killer.

HIGH HEELS 10/17/49... The Lone Ranger and Tonto help a short farmer who is ashamed of his height.

OLD JOE'S SISTER 12/22/49... A man's sister visits him for the first time in over 30 years and she has no idea he is being impersonated by an escaped convict. This is a great episode.

CANNONBALL MCKAY 12/29/49... The Lone Ranger and Tonto investigate a series of stagecoach robberies in a small western town.

WAR HORSE 10/20/49... A man hires others to steal a horse from an Indian brave and the Ranger and Tonto must avert a disaster.

This show is a great reflection on how our country used to be. It's good, clean fun and entertaining without all the nonsense and PC garbage of today. I'm sure most of you have seen this show at one time or another, but if it's been a while, try it again....the memories come flooding back.

JUDGE ROY BEAN 1956 (ECHO BRIDGE)

This is a rather obscure TV series and these are the only episodes I have been able to catch so far.

This show ran one season in 1955 and starred Edgar Buchanan as store keeper Roy Bean who is fed up with lawlessness in Lantry Texas, so he sets himelf up as a judge and brings law and order to the town.

There are only two episodes on the disc I saw these on, but they were both enjoyable.

One is entitled THE EYES OF TEXAS and involves two men trying to steal land from the Indians. They kill a beave and then the judge must find them in order to prevent an all out massacre.

The second episode if entitled SUNBURNT GOLD and in this episode the Judge goes after some men who have stolen gold coins and melt them down into nuggets so they can't be indentified.

Both a very well done and I know this show is streaming on Amazone Prime, but I haven't seen them yet. The show is in color which is kind of different for the time it was made.

I assume most people reading this have seen this show at one point or another, and if you're a westerns fan and haven't seen them you should. Buchanan always makde things fun to watch with his down home style.
