This one of the more obscure Toho films made in the 1950's. Varan didn't do too well at the box office so Toho didn't use him again until 1969's Destroy All Monsters. The story centers around a mysterious God of a small island that happens to be Varan, who eventually leaves the island and heads for Japan.
This was seen for many years in the US in a butchered version which had most of the movie edited out and more American footage put in.
The monster is pretty cool I think and the movie isn't bad at all, I just cannot figure out why this died at the box office. Oh well, now it can be enjoyed thanks to Tokyo Shock.
