One of my all time favorite movies gets a beautiful blu-ray release and it was well worth the wait.
John Agar stars as scientist Steve March, who is getting some very high gamma ray and radiation counts from a place called Mystery Mountain, about 30 miles from his lab.
He and his co-worker scientist Dan Murphey (Robert Fuller) head to Mystery Mountain and find more than they bargained for. A brain-like monster from outer space named Gor kills Dan and takes over the body of Steve.
When Steve returns alone his girlfriend Sally Fallon (Joyce Meadows) asks where Dan is and Steve lies to her about where he is. Sally is practically sexually assulted by Steve who has developed some very strange habits.
Sally and her father John Fallon (Thomas B. Henry) go to Mystery Mountain as well and discover Dan's dead body. They are met by another brain from space named Vol. He has come to Earth to capture Gor before he takes over the entire world. In order to do this he has to inhabit a body. After much discussion, it is decided that Vol will inhabit the body of Sally's dog George.
In the meantime, Gor, is Steve's body destroys airplanes by staring at them and then destroys an entire nuclear test facility while demanding that all the nations of the world fall in line and obey him.
I'm telling you, they just cannot make great movies ike this anymore. Everything about this movie works. The cast is a B movie lovers dream, the brains are cool looking and the plot is over the top.
The Blu-ray has several extras including two looks at the career of director Nathan Juran and a very amusing 11 minute intro featuring Joyce Meadows. The film looks very, very good and there are a couple of small jump cuts in the film, but don't let that deter you from one of the most enjoyable films of the 1950's.
The rest of the cast include Ken Terrell, Henry Travis, Dale Tate and Tim Graham. VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
