James Stewart stars as a man who arrives in a small western town under mysterious circumstances, and soon becomes vicious enemies with a ranch owner named Dave Waggonman, played with gusto by Alex Nicol.
Stewart goes to work for Waggonman's enemy and we also find out that he is looking for a mysterious man who is selling repeating rifles to the Apaches. Arthur Kennedy is Waggonman's best friend and knows who is selling the rifles to the Apaches.
Mann sets this up as a great western film noir with plenty of action and lots of colorful characters. The supporting cast also includes Cathy O' Donnell, Wallace Ford, Jack Elam and John War Eagle.
If you like westerns, this is a must see.
