PEARL OF DEATH 1945 (MPI)

Another fine entry in the Sherlock Holmes series helmed by Roy William Neill.

This excellent mystery is about a pearl that seems to cause everyone misfortune. While it is being kept at a museum it is stolen by a master criminal. What is unusual is that the theft is caused by Holmes show boating the pearl, and now he must find it.

Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) must now go against the criminal as well as a huge, insane killer known as the Creeper, who snaps peoples spines.

This is one of the most enjoyable films in the series for a couple of reasons. First, as I just mentioned we get the first film to feature The Creeper (Rondo Hatton). This killer would appear again in the Universal horror film "House Of Horrors" in 1946. Secondly is beautiful Evelyn Ankers, usually a damsel in distress in many Universal films gets a great role as one of the criminals seeking the pearl.

Based of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story "The Six Napoleans" this fun Universal film is not to be missed by fans of the genre or Holmes fans. The restoration of the film is beautiful.

The rest of the cast includes Dennis Hoey as Lastrade, Miles Mander, Ian Wolfe and Mary Gordon as Mrs. Hudson. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
