This week we'll start at number 40. There were a lot of very good releases this year, and picking this list was very difficult, and while my choices may not agree with yours, we can all agree that 2016 was a banner year.
40. TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE COMPLETE SERIES (CBS)...This series from George Romero has been re-released onto DVD and it was a pleasure to see these after so many years. I had the show at one time, lost it and then a few months ago found it sitting on a shelf in a store and grabbed it up quickly.
39. SONNY BOY (SHOUT FACTORY) BLU-RAY...One of the most bizarre films I have ever seen. A married couple played by Paul Smith and David Carradine raise a child who is also used as a killer. This film will have your jaw hitting the floor.
38. THE GUARDIAN (SHOUT FACTORY) BLU-RAY... William Friedkin directed this film in which a nanny is planning on sacrificing an infant to a tree god worshiped by Druids. Yes, it's twisted and yes it's damn good. The Blu-ray is excellent.
37. NAKED WITCH (SINISTER CINEMA)...Early 60's regional film from Larry Buchanan. A very rare film finally put out on DVD from Sinister. Not the greatest film ever, and it's $8000 budget shows, but I like it a lot and was happy to finally see it. A college student accidentally brings a dead witch back to life.
36. SSSSSSSSSSSSSS (SHOUT FACTORY) BLU-RAY...Classic 70's horror about a mad scientist who is trying to change people into snakes. Strother Martin steals the show. Great title!!
35. CITY OF THE DEAD (VCI) BLU-RAY...Aka Horror Hotel. A cult of witches is alive and well in a small New England town. This disc from VCI is the best you will ever see this film. An atmospheric thriller starring Christopher Lee.
34. DONOVAN'S BRAIN (KINO) BLU-RAY...Often overlooked sci-fi from the 50's about an evil brain kept alive by a scientist. Lew Ayres, Nancy Davis and Gene Evans make a great cast. Glad to see this finally given some great treatment on the digital market.
33. JOURNEY TO THE 7TH PLANET (KINO) BLU-RAY...Great sci-fi gem about astronauts landing on Uranus and finding the planet inhabited by women from their past. John Agar leads a great cast. I love this movie and will never forget first seeing it on a double feature with the 1941 Wolfman on TV. The movie looks fantastic on Blu-ray.
32. GHOST CAT OF OTAMA POND (SINISTER CINEMA)...Early 1960's Japanese horror film about a vengeful spirit of a cat. The Japanese know how to tell excellent ghost stories, and this is a prime example. Very nice widescreen presentation. In Japanese with English subtitles.
31. HAMMER HORROR COLLECTION VOL. 2 (MILL CREEK)...Six more classic Hammer films get excellent treatment from Mill Creek. The films include MANIAC, DIE DIE MY DARLING, REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE SNORKEL, NEVER TAKE CANDY FROM A STRANGER and CREATURES THE WORLD FORGOT. We need more sets like this to be released.
