I had never seen this movie before, but have always been a Steve McQueen fan. I became interested in seeing it when I discovered that the very beguiling Judy Pace was in it.
Her role is very small, but I must see everything she was in. McQueen is Thomas Crown, a multi millionaire who plots a perfect robbery just for the hell of it.
A detective, Eddy Malone (Paul Burke) is stumped by the case but soon gets help from an independent insurance investigator named Vicki Anderson (Faye Dunaway). She has her own way of doing things and slowly begins to unravel the case.
She suspects Crown is the brains behind the heist and the two become involved in a cat and mouse game. They also start to fall in love and this, of course, complicates matters.
Directed by Norman Jewison, this film really moves along and the unique use of multiple split screens is something new and really works well within the confines of the film. McQueen had said this was his favorite film as it gave him a chance to play a low key character, and he does it very well.
The rest of the top notch cast includes Yaphet Kotto, Jack Weston, Biff McGuire, Astrid Heeren, Gordon Pinsent and Richard Bull. The ending was quite pleasing and I would recommend this over the insipid remake of several years ago.
This brings me one step closer to seeing everything Judy Pace was in, and even though her role is very small and she is credited as "pretty girl", to me she steals the show. RECOMMENDED.
