BLAZING SADDLES 1974 (WARNER) BLU-RAY

One of the most outrageous films ever made!!

This classic comedy directed by Mel Brooks stand right up there with "Airplane" as the last vestiges of truly good American comedy.

The evil Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman) wants to make more money and soon discovers that a railroad line is going to be re-routed thru the small town where everyone seems to be named Johnson.

To make sure everyone will leave the town he get the Governor (Mel Brooks) to assign a black sheriff to the town, and there you have the crux for this entire movie.

This film has more sight gags and one liners than you can catch in a single viewing which is why one must see this film multiple times. Cleavon Little stands out as Bart, the black sheriff who tries to keep the town together despite being so unpopular.

One of the funniest films made with a top notch cast that also includes Gene Wilder, Slim Pickens, Madeline Kahn, Alex Karras, David Huddleston, John Hillerman, Jack Starrett, Dom DeLuise, Don Megowan and Robyn Hilton.

If you've never seen this film, you should. It's a perfect example of what comedy should be. This is the type of comedy that was genuinely funny and cannot be made anymore because of liberal democrats and their insane PC shit they enforce on people. Back in 1974 everyone could laugh at themselves and have a good time...not so for the past 21 years.

THE SHOOTING 1966 (TCM VIEWING)

Excellent Monte Hellman western.

I hadn't seen this film in many years but it was just as good and bizarre as I remembered it.

A mysterious, nameless woman played by Millie Perkins hires and ex bounty hunter turned miner, Willett Gashade and his slightly simple partner Coley to help her take a trip across the desert and at first her reasons are not made clear.

Willett agrees to this as his mine is rather unsuccessful in that one of his partners is dead and his brother Coin has gone missing..

It soon become apparent that the woman is making a trip to a far away town in order to seek revenge against the man who killed her son and husband. Shortly after the journey begins Willett makes it clear he does like the woman in the least, but his partner Coley is somewhat smitten with her.

The group is soon joined by a well dressed young man named Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson) who is a hired killer. The tension mounts as the journey begins to take it's toll.

There is a lot of bizarre scenes in this film, and some of the things that go on are not made clear, but if you pay attention the climax is a wonderful payoff.

Directed by Monte Hellman in the deserts near Kanab, Utah, this little film is one of the best of it's kind. It's very minimalist and yet has more sights to offer than most films.

The acting is all top notch, and Perkins does as excellent job as a woman whose humanity has been completely removed after the murder of her husband and son.

This film was shot back to back with another Hellman classic western entitled "Ride In The Whirlwind" which is just as good.

I would recommend this great little movie to not just western fans, but film fans in general. I have heard that Roger Corman was an uncredited producer on this film, and I can very much believe this as it does seem to have a lot of the Corman staples in it. Anyway, just check it out.

BLACKENSTEIN 1972 (SEVERIN) BLU-RAY

One of the most amazing blaxploitation films ever made comes to Blu-ray!!

A man who has had all four limbs blown off in Vietnam is taken to a Dr. Stein (John Hart) by his lovely girlfriend Dr. Winifred Walker (Ivory Stone).

Dr. Stein has been experimenting with DNA and is convinced he can help Eddie Turner (Joe De Sue) grow his limbs back. All seems to be going well until Dr. Stein's assistant Malcomb (Roosevelt Jackson) starts to fall for Walker. She spurns him and he exchanges the DNA of one patient for another to make sure Eddie will die and then maybe Walker will fall for him.

What this does is creates a square headed monster that stalks the night ripping people apart. Eddie has now become a monster that kills to get revenge of just for the sake of killing.

Seeing this monster is something one who views the film will ever forget. The acting in the film is passable and the low budget is obvious, but to me anyway, this is still a fun film.

The backstory of the films is even more interesting and it is included in the extras as we have an interview with producer Frank Saletri's sister June and the actual news story of Saletri's still unsolved murder as well as the original theatrical trailer and short interviews with Ken Osborne and Robert Dix, both me who also worked with and knew Saletri.

I was really surprised when this was announced as coming to Blu-ray. There are two versions of the film included here. The theatrical release version running at 78 min. and the Video release version running 87 min.

The Theatrical version is much tighter and is easily the recommended version. A very good release from my point of view and a hearty thanks to Severin for releasing it in a beautiful version.

RIP MAURY DEXTER 1928-2017

The man who brought us "Day Mars Invaded The Earth" has passed away.

Dexter directed the above mentioned film and many others including "House Of The Damned", Hell's Belles" and "The Mini Skirt Mob".

He also helmed some episodes of "Little House On The Prairie" and "Father Murphy". I loved this man's movie work as most of the films were just plain odd. I proudly own the Hell's Belles poster.

Dexter passed away on May 28th at the age of 89.

VOODOO BLACK EXORCIST 1974 (FILM DETECTIVE) BLU-RAY

Very, very bizarre film.

I was really surprised to see this film coming to Blu-ray and I knew I had to purchase it right away.

The movie starts 1000 years ago with a fight between two men over a woman. Both men are in black body make-up that comes off in the water. One man is killed and the other, Guede Nibo and his woman Kenya are punished for this "crime".

She is beheaded and he is mummified. Move 1000 years ahead and his mummified remains are brought aboard a luxury liner for transport to the US.

He returns to life and kills several people on the liner and every once in a while he reverts to his mummy-like state. Nibo finds himself smitten with a gorgeous woman on the ship named Silvia (Eva Leon) who reminds him of his long lost love, Kenya.

There is a lot of weird stuff going on and many, many disjointed scenes and some make no sense at all, but the movie is somehow still interesting. The previous versions of this film that have been available have been muddy and cropped. it's very nice to see this film looking better than I have ever seen it and in it's original wiescreen.

It may not be the best film ever made, but it is of interest to horror fans, or at least I hope it is. Check it out.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO....

RIP ANNE KIMBELL 1932-2017

The star of Roger Corman's first monster movie has died.

In her 11 year acting career Kimbell was never a big name, but she did do some pretty memorable stuff for us monster movie fans.

She starred in "Monster From The Ocean Floor" for Roger Corman as well as "The Golden Idol" and the very rare "Port Sinister".

She passed away at the age of 84 on May 16th, 2017.

RIP ELENA VERDUGO 1925-2017

The actress most remembered for her role as Consuelo Lopez on 169 episodes of Marcus Welby, M.D. has died.

Verdugo will always be remembered for the above mentioned role but she also appeared in many other TV shows such as "Love American Style", "Petticoat Junction" and "Rawhide".

I was first introduced to her in such classic films as "The Frozen Ghost" and "House of Frankenstein".

Her gypsy dance in the latter film will never be forgotten. She was 92.

RAMBLINGS...

I put up a poll a while back and it kind of surprised me about the answers I got.

The question was basically "Do you put a lot of thought into movies as you watch them?" The answers came back and it turned out to be a 50/50 split in answers.

I asked this question because I feel too many people do not appreciate older films and low budget films because they want too much realism instead of just pure entertainment.

When I watch something I let my mind go and just enjoy it for what it is. Thanks to everyone who participated.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO....

Robert Powell is 73, Robin Mattson is 61, and Misty Rowe is 65.

PLAYGIRL KILLER 1967 ( PLATINUM)

Great little psycho killer film.

William Kerwin stars as Bill, an artist who is trying to get the "perfect" beauty onto his artists canvas. The one problem Bill has is that the women all move.

The slightest movement causes Bill to go into a psychotic rage and kill the women! He kills one with a speargun in the opening scene and this pretty much sets up the entire film.

As he escapes from the police he happens upon a young, lovely woman who is staying at her fathers mansion, and Bill ecides to set up shop there after being seduced by the woman.

His killing gets worse and worse, but not to worry. Bill puts the bodies in a freezer and creates an even greater piece of art.

This is one bizarre film, but a hell of a lot of fun thanks to Kerwin and everyone involved. Neil Sedaka also stars as a singer named Bob who croons a tune called "Waterbug" early in the film.

This has been in my DVD library since the very early days of the medium and it has been about 8 years since I watched it. I found it had lost none of it's entertainment value for me over that time. Platinum was a company out of Wisconsin that turned out some very interesting stuff back in the early days of DVD, and this is one of them.

Highly Recommended viewing, and what an ending!!
