GIANT OF MARATHON 1959 (SINISTER CINEMA)

Steve Reeves stars in this good adventure film.

He stars as Phillipides an Olympic champion in 490 BC, who is appointed commander of the Sacred Guard in the city of Athens.

During his time with the guard he falls in love with a beautiful woman whose name he doesn't know and yet he still looks for her everywhere. Meanwhile, the evil forces of Persia are hoping to invade and overtake Athens.

Phillipides helps his people by getting the armies to unify in order to stop the Persia invasion. There is a lot of action and intrigue in this fine film directed by Jacques Tourneur and finished by Mario Bava.

If you're a fan of these films, this is a great one to catch. The print from Sinister is very good and in widescreen. The rest of the cast includes many familiar faces such as Alberto Lupo, Sergio Fatoni, Ivo Garrani and the beautiful Mylene Demongeot as "Andromeda" the love of Phillipides life.

SHE BEAST 1965 (SINISTER CINEMA)

A Barbara Steele gem I hadn't seen for years.

Steele plays Veronica who along with her new husband Philip (Ian Ogilvy) are traveling in Europ on a honeymoon.

The country they visit is never named but several characters rever to it as "The People's Republic" and there are a lot of anti communism thrown in to the mix, which I really enjoy.

Anyway on a trip out of twon they have a car accident and Philip is rescued but his wife is missing. In her place is a hideous witch that terroized the countryside a few hundred years before.

Philip is told by Count Von Helsing (John Karlsen) that the witch has replaced Veronica so she can seek revenge. The witch does enact very bloody revenge on the relatives of those that killed her. The most graphic killing occurs when she uses a sickel to kill Ladislav Groper (Mel Welles) and the blood spews everywhere.

When the witch is finished she throws the sickel away and it lands on a hammer. Hey, I thought it was funny. Philip and Von Helsing try to capture the witch and get Veronica back.

The film was directed by Mike Reeves and it was his first film after a brief stint directing parts of "Castle Of The Living Dead". The print from Sinister is a beautiful widescreen edition with great color.

I assume most of the people reading this have seen it, but if you haven't check it out. The witch is hideous.

THE SNOW WOMAN 1968 (SINISTER CINEMA)

Another great Japanese horror film!!

A sculptor and his teacher encounter a demon known as The Snow Woman and the teacher is killed. The demon allows the student to live as long as he never tells the story to anyone else. He agrees and then time passes.

Soon he meets a beautiful woman whom he marries and has a child with. They are terrorized by the ruling class of the village, but they continue loving each other and raising their child.

Things soon start to come apart as the village shaman accuses the woman of being a demon. Is she, or isn't she? This film has beautiful color and a great widescreen presentation.

It's a well acted horror film and love story that ends on a very sad note. Shiho Fujimura is excellent as Yuki, the young woman who may or may not be a demon. I will not divulge the ending, but it's very cool and the plot to this film has been done a few times in American horror films like Tales From The Darkside.

If you're a fan of Japanese horror, then this is perfect for you. I and my wife enjoyed the hell out of this film. I really recommend this for a few shivers.

RIP GLORIA HENRY 1923-2021

The actress who portrayed the mother of Dennis The Menace has died.

She started he 65 year acting career in 1947 in a movie entitled "Sport Of Kings". After that she appeared in many more films including "Bulldog Drummond Strikes Back", "Johnny Allegro", "Al Jennings Of Oklahoma" and "Rancho Notorious" just to name a few.

Her greatest claim to fame came in 1959 when she landed the role of Alice Mitchell the mother of Dennis The Menace. The show ran from 1959-1963.

She got out of acting for 16 years starting in 1965 but came back in 1981 and appeared in many TV shows such as "Simon & Simon", "Newhart", "Silver Spoons" and many more.

She passed away on April 3rd. 2021, one day after she turned 98.

GHOST STORY OF THE SEVEN WONDERS OF HONSHO 1959 (SINISTER CINEMA)

Very rare and unusual film.

This is a Japanese horror film that really holds your attention. The story revolves around a Samurai who rescues a spirit known as a Tanuki.

As a result of his kindness the spirit vows to watch over him, and it's a good thing because the samurai's son is planning to murder him for his money.

There is a lot of bizarre creatures in this film and all are, of course from Japanese culture. The acting is fine for this kind of movie and comes across as very believable.

It's in Japanese language, but it does have subtitles and the print quality is very good indeed. The black and white photography comes across as moody. It's a quick moving film at only 55 minutes and for fans of Japanese horror, this is a MUST see.

I don't know why this film is known by so many different titles, but no matter what the title, the film is very good. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

GREAT ALLIGATOR 1979 (AMAZON PRIME)

Not too bad of a film.

Mel Ferrer stars as the head of a tourist resort that also happens to be ruled by a legendary giant alligator god worshipped by the local natives.

Barbara Back looks sexy as ever as Alice Brandt who is the second in command to Ferrer. The natives are not too keen on the tourists being there and they summon the god to kill them all.

After a few people are killed Ferrer's characted of Joshua begins to believe that the legend is real. Before you know it the great alligator attacks a boat full of tourists and all hell breaks loose.

The natives join in the slaughter as they kill some of the people with speasrs and such and then they kidnap Alice as a sacrifice to the monster! This is a wild ending to the film and it comes across as a sincere effort from director Sergio Martino.

If one is in the right frame of mind, this can be a fun little film. A lot of people don't like this film, but I say give it a try and how could you go wrong with the sexy Bach in a movie?
