COMING ATTRACTIONS....

Just a quick note here.

On March 16th, 2021 this film will finally be getting the proper Blu-ray treatment. I REALLY hope we see more Nikkatsu films coming to Blu-ray. Synapse is the company releasing this gem.

HANNAH LEE: AN AMERICAN PRIMITIVE 1953 (WESTERNMANIA)

This is a 50's western I had never even heard of. It was unique to say the least.

This is a Jack Broder production starring MacDonald Carey as a gunslinger named Bus Crow. This is a little different of a role for Carey and he does a good job with it.

Joanna Dru is Hannah Lee, and even thought she is the title character, her part seems rather insignificant. Crow is hired by some big businessmen in the small western town to rid it of squatters, and he takes the job of killing with no feeling whatsoever.

Outrage causes the people to demand a sheriff come to town to restore law and order and one arrives named Sam Rochelle (John Ireland). Rochelle seems to know Crowe is behind the killings, but can't prove it.

Hannah slowly falls for Crow even though she knows he is a heartless killer. Everything comes to a wild showdown between Rochelle and Crow. This is not a well known film, but I discovered that it was even shot in 3D!!

This film is one of the strangest films I have seen in the western genre and I can't quite put my finger on why exactly. However, if you get a chance, you might want to see this and I hope you enjoy it. I did, but I am not very discriminating.

RIP GENE CORMAN 1927-2020

The brother of Roger Corman has passed away.

Corman was born Sept. 24th 1927 and produced his first film entitled "HOT CAR GIRL" in 1958. After that he never looked back as he produced over 30 other films. Many of them for his brother Roger under the FILMGROUP banner.

Some of the other films he produced include "NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST", "ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES", "TOWER OF LONDON", "SKI PARTY", "COOL BREESE", "THE SLAMS" and many more.

Roger and Gene made films that were both entertaining and highly profitable. Many of their films I grew up with and still love to this day. Gene was never in the spotlight like Roger has been, but his influence in films is undeniable.

He passed away on Sept. 28, 2020 at the age of 93, just 4 days after his birthday from natural causes.

SHIVERS 1975 (VESTRON) BLU-RAY

I just viewed this film on Tubi and the print quality was simply beautiful

Now Vestron has released this stunning Blu-ray and it looks better than it ever has or ever will. David Cronenberg directed this gory tale about sexual parasites loose in an apartment complex outside of Montreal.

The movie opens with an old doctor killing a young woman with no explanation for us. We soon discover, along with others in the film that he was the one that created the parasite and he was trying to destroy it. That doesn't work and soon the entire complex in taken over by people engaging in bizarre sexual behavior.

The print of this film is visually stunning abd have NEVER looked better. The disc also features an interview with director Cronenberg and actress Lynn Lowery. Both are informative and fun to listen to.

I have seen many versions of this film in various quality, and this is by far the best. If you're a Cronenberg fan you don't want to miss this long awaited gem on Blu-ray. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED One of the best releases of 2020!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO

BELLS OF SAN ANGELO 1947 (WESTERNMANIA)

A pretty good Roy Rogers western.

In this outing Roy plays a government inspector who joins with a small town sheriff Cookie Bullfincher (Andy Devine) in order to find out who is smuggling silver from the Mexican border.

They are joined by a writer namwed Lee Madison (Dale Evans) and the three of them soon find more trouble than they bargained for. Roy is beaten up by no less than five thgs who have no respect for anything but the valuable metal.

Roy and Cookie finally come up with a way to put an end to the smuggling, but it may cost Lee her life. There is plenty of action, gun fights, songs and much more in this Truecolor western from Republic Studios.

I can't imagine and "B" western fan not seeing this film. Roy Rogers was indeed one of a kind, and his films can still be enjoyed by fans everywhere. I know they are available on DVD, Blu-ray and many PD companies. However, I saw this on a streaming channel and enjoyed it very much.

The rest of the cast includes Hank Patterson, John McGuire, David Sharp and Fritz Leiber. Recommended.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Judy Landers is 62.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN MYSTERY 1935 (WESTERNMANIA)

This is an early Randolph Scott film that I discovered one day by accident.

Scott stars as Larry Sutton, a young man seeking a job at a Radium mine. He is also investigating the disappearance of his cousin.

He befriends Tex Murdock (Charles Sale) and both begin working together to solve a murder. This really reminds me of an old dark house movies than a western based on a Zane Grey novel.

The action unfolds at the mine as people are killed one by one until Sutton and Murdock put two and two together in an ending that may either surprise you or not.

Paramount released this and it seems to have vanished for a while, but I discovered it on a streaming channel and figured I'd give it a whirl, and I'm glad I did. Scott has always been a favorite of mine, and in this film you can see the beginnings of his western character that would become so familiar in later years.

If you're a fan of "B" westerns this is something I can recommend. Ann Sheridan has the role of the leading lady that captures Suttons heart. The title I saw this under is "The Fighting Westerner".

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Lori Saunders is 79, Kerry Sherman is 67, and Kyra Schon is 63.

ACTION JACKSON 1988 (WARNERS)

No too bad of an action film.

This is a film that sometimes seems to have fallen into the cracks of much bigger films. Carl Weathers stars as a Detroit cop who always seems to be getting into trouble. At the beginning of the film we find he has been demoted for previous actions.

Jackson soon finds himself mixed up with an old enemy named Peter Dellaplane (Crain T. Nelson) who is a super rich auto executive trying to take over a small union by any means nesessary.

Jackson is anxious to pin a couple of murder raps on Dellaplane, but has no proof. Dellapane's wife Patrice (Sharon Stone) decides to help Jackson after she uncovers some evidence, but her husband kills her for her efforts.

Jackson is framed for the murder and so he decides to see if he can get help from Dellaplanes gorgeous mistress Sydney Ash (Vanity). The two of them find themselves caught in a huge web of murder and blackmail as the rest of the movie unfolds.

This film moves along very quickly and it never gets boring. Weathers is perfect for the role of Jackson and Vanity is, well, sexy as hell. Her role as the mistress is very believable and she plays off of Weathers very well.

The rest of the cast includes Nicholas Worth, Robert Davi and Ed O' Ross. Some say this is a black action film but I don't really think it fits into the "blaxploitation" genre, but it is a good film, and one action fans should check out.

Vanity passed away in 2016 at the young age of 57 from Kidney failure.
