MEGALODON 2002 (MONARCH)
An oil rig accidently breaks a mysterious barrier and finds another ocean under our ocean and out of that escapes a sixty foor megalodon shark that terrorizes the people on the rig.
This is a weird movie in that the shark is menacing enough but really doesn't do much. It does kill a few people and provide a few scares, but I feel the filmmakers didn't go far enough with using the shark to build tension.
It's a good direct to video movie and an allright horror film, buf I do think they could have done a little better. Leighanne Littrell is good as the reporter on the rig for a story, and the ending with her is interesting and leaves the door open for more of this kind of film.

MUTANT X 2001-2004 (ADV)
This is a very interesting show that ran from 2001 thru 2004 about a small group of people who possess powers because of genetic engineering. These people try and save the earth from various threats and keep their identities a secret at the same time.
The show is very interesting and had very high ratings but was canceled when the production company was disbanded without warning.
I have to recommend this to anyone who likes good sci-fi. It is a hard show to find on DVD, but I managed to get a few second season episodes and I am impressed. One os the stars of the show is the always sexy Victoris Pratt as Shalamar Fox, a mutant combination of animal and human DNA. Pratt was also in another show I enjoyed called Cleopatra 2525. The others in the cast include Forbes March, Victor Webster, John Shea and Lauren Lee Smith.
Recommended if you can find it. I hope it gets re-released soon.

HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE 2011 (SOMETHING WEIRD)
Fantastic look at the career of the man who started the entire "gore" genre of movies, from his humble beginnings as a filmmaker doing "nudie cuties" to Blood Feast and much more.
There are interviews with many people including Lewis, the late Great David Friedman, Bunny Yeager, Mal Arnold and many other who recall working with lewis in Florida during the hay days of movie making.
Rare clips and outtakes are featured and many interesting stories about these films. Various film clips are shown from all of his movies including Blood Feast, 2000 Maniacs, Gore Gore Girls and more. I highly recommend this if you are a film fan or a fan of Lewis, this is easily one of the best releases of the year.
Mike Vraney produced and Frank Henenlotter and Jimmy Maslon directed.

REST IN PEACE.....CAPULINA
Mexican funnyman Capulina (Gaspar Perez) passed away on Sept. 30th at the age of 84. I love Mexican Cinema and always have, and I loved this mans movies. His films always received criticism for being too silly, but damn they were fun.
Genre fans will remember him most from such films as Capulina vs. The Vampires and Santo Vs. Capulina. His comedy was very inoffensive, unlike those of today, and we have lost a true talent.

HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB 1972 (BCI ECLIPSE)
Another great Paul Naschy horror film about an evil warlock who has his head cut off in the 16th century and then his wife is also killed. Moving into 1972 several people go looking for the body and unleash a terror they have no idea how to handle.
This is Naschy's take on the 1958 Universal film The Thing That Couldn't Die as his warlocks severed head takes control of several people in order to find it's body and become re-attached. Helga Line is the warlock's wife who is also brought back to life and together the two seek fresh victims around the countryside, and they even have a small army of the living dead to help them!!
This movie has great atmosphere, as do all Spanish movies of the period.
Naschy and Line make a great evil couple and if you're a fan of Euro horror, you'll love this.

VELVET VAMPIRE 1972 (SHOUT FACTORY)
Extremely enjoyable film about a young couple played by Michael Blogett and Sherry Miles accpet an invitation from a seductive young woman to spend a few days at her desert home.
The couple accepts and soon find themselves in a web of bizarre dreams and happenings. Celeste Yarnall is Diane LaFanu, who is actually a vampire that wants Miles for her own. The bizarre things keep happening and soon they culminate is a truely weird ending.
This is a wonderful film that is never boring and Yarnall makes it all worthwhile as she is beautiful in every single frame of film. Roger Corman's New World Pictures released this in 1972 and Stephanie Rothman directed. Highly recommended and part of the Roger Corman Cult Classics Vampires, Mummies and Monsters 2 disc set.
