This is the film that started the big bug cycle of the 1950's, and what a film it is.
James Arness and James Whitmore star. Arness is an FBI man who is looking into the disappearance of an agent while Whitmore is an L.A. cop who found a little girl wondering in the desert in a state of shock. They soon discover why she is in that state.
Giant ants appear in the Mohave desert and are soon spreading everywhere. After a long chase they are finally cornered in the sewer system of Los Angeles.
Horror films just don't get any better than this. The acting is top notch with a great cast and the music really sets the eerie mood. The sound the ants make is something I will always remember. Good stuff here, especially the battle with the monsters on a doomed ship and in the sewer system.
Edmund Gwenn is the scientist brought into the case and the lovely Joan Weldon is his daughter. This is MUST see movie making for horror fans.
The cast is rounded out by Olin Howlin, Fess Parker, Onslow Stevens, Sean McClory and Sandy Descher.
