FIRST SPACESHIP ON VENUS 1959 (TREE LINE)

Very well made international film about a group of people who head to Venus after a mysterious stone is found on earth that conatins an ancient record from Venus. When they arrive they find traces of an ancient civilzation that was actually making plans for the destruction of Earth.
The effects are very good for the time, and the acting is fine as well. I always liked the design of the spaceship.
This is a 78 minute version of what I have heard is a much longer film in it's original version, but I like it none the less. If you get a chance check it out, this is a very enjoyable little film that seems to get lost most times.

WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST 1958 (LIONSGATE)

AIP horror film is a sequel to Amazing Colossal Man, and it finds the giant still alive in Mexico feeding off of food trucks that pass along a lonely stretch of road. His face is very messed up since the last film he fell off of Hoover dam after being shot with a bazooka.
He is eventually captured and brought back to LA until it is decided on what to do with him. He escapes and goes on a small destruction spree up to Griffith park where he finally does himself in by grabbing high tension power lines. The ending to this film is also in color.
Dean parkin takes over the role of Colonel Glenn Manning the giant, lovely Sally Fraser is his sister, and Roger Pace is the Major trying to figure out what to do with a sixty foot giant in LA. The rest of the cast is headed by Russ Bender, Hal Torey and George Becwar.
I love 50's horror and sci-fi and have never lost the childhood fascination for these movies. Highly Recommended.

MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL 1957 (NAVARRE)

I admit I love this movie. Jim Davis and Robert Griffin star as scientists who must travel to Africa after a rocket crashes with radioactive infested wasps on board. They soon find huge wasps running out of control in the middle of Africa.
Cheap and fun, this film actually uses stop motion animation for some of the scenes of the wasps, and it looks good for what it is. The monsters are cool and they use tons of stock footage from Stanley & Livingston as the scientists trek across the dark continent. The rest of the cast includes Joel Fluellen, Barbara Turner, Eduardo Ciannelli and Vladamir Sokoloff.
The VHS I used to have had the actual color ending where the entire film went red when the volcanos started erupting, but I have never seen that version on DVD. Hey, if you love 50's sci-fi like I do, check it out.

WAR ARROW 1953 (UNIVERSAL)

Jeff Chandler stars as a rugged soldier who is brought in to help stop Indian attacks near a small Army outpost. Maureen O' Hara is gorgeous as a young women who finds her husband is leading the Indians in the attacks.
Great western film with lots of gunfights and action and shot in beautiful Technicolor. The rest of the cast includes Noah Beery, Jr, Charles Drake, Dennis Weaver and Suzan Ball.

ROCKETSHIP X M 1950 (NAVARRE)

Early, but well made sci-fi about the first expidition to the moon which, after a mishap in flight turns out to be a trip to Mars. Once there the astronauts find a lost race of violent people who live like cavemen after an atomic war.
Great pulp sci-fi with John Emery as the leader of the expidition along with Lloyd Bridges, Hugh O'Brian, Noah Beery, Jr and Osa Massen. Morris Ankrum leads things back on earth. Good movie and good fun for sci-fi fans. Still holds up reasonably well today and far more entertaining than anything at the movies in the last 6 years.
One interesting side note, it is the leading lady who makes the fatal mistake at the end of the film. it's the only one I have ever seen that ends that way.

DUEL AT SILVER CREEK (1952) UNIVERSAL

This is a very well made western with Audie Murphey as a young man who forms an uneasy alliance with a sheriff to bring down a band of claim jumpers. Gerald Mohr is the leader of the jumpers and he is aided by his partner played by Faith Domergue, whi is actually one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen and, in this film, one of the most cold blooded ever.
Susan Cabot is Murphey's love interest and Stephen McNally is the sheriff. The rest of the cast is topped with Lee Marvin, Walter Sande and Eugene Iglesias as the very evil Johnny Sombrero. This movie is well paced and never lets you lose your attention. Highly recommended for movie fans and particularly western fans.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO.....

Tia Carrere is 45, Kate Bosworth is 29, Karina Smirnoff is 34, and John Considine is 77.
