PRINCE OF SPACE 1959 (DARK SKY)

What a truly bizarre film this is!!

A superhero named Prince of Space fights an invasion from the planet Krankor headed by a strange villain who calls himself Phantom.

There are some hilarious fight scenes an Prince of Space has an alter ego was Wally! a bootblack!! The aliens are helpless against Prince, but they fight him anyway.

This is very much like the "Starman" films and it will put you in the mood for those as well. It did for me anyway! The most classic line int he film happens when Prince of Space is fighting Phantom and says "Your breathe turns my stomach." They simply don't make films like this anymore.

dark Sky brings us a really good print and if you're in the right mood this film will highly entertain. The other feature on the disc is "Invasion of The Neptune Men".

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN 1948 (UNIVERSAL)

It has been a very long time since I watched this movie, and it still strikes me as one of the greatest comedies ever made.

A lot has been written about this film, and it has a pretty simple plot. Bud and Lou are working at a baggage claim business when they suddenly get a phone call from a mysterious man saying not to deliver two crates because they will be in great danger.

It turns out the caller is Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney) and he turns into a werewolf while on the phone Lou begins barking back into the phone. This scene in itself is priceless.

Needless to say the crates are delivered to McDougal's House Of Horrors, and that is when Dracula and Frankenstein first appear. The scenes in the House Of Horrors are as funny as anything one in film. It seems that Dracula and a female doctor want to put Lou's brain into the monster.

There are some truly funny sight gags and slapstick humor along the way. Comedy has never been better than in this film an if you haven't seen it, you SHOULD!! One of the best films ever made!!

The cast includes, of course, Bela Lugosi as Dracula, Glenn Strange as Frankenstein, Lenore Aubert, Jane Randolph, Frank Ferguson and Charles Bradstreet.

RIP GREGG PALMER 1927-2015

An actor that had a lot of great roles in small films has passed away.

Although he appeared in 22 episodes of "GUNSMOKE" and hundreds of other western TV shows, Palmer will always be remembered most for his rare leading role in the classic 1957 horror film "ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU".

He also starred as Kimo in "FROM HELL IT CAME". Of the hundreds of TV shows he appeared in he liked the "Gunsmoke" performances the best.

He passed away on Halloween at the age of 88.

AMERICAN TOP 40 THE 70'S

This was a great year for music. It was a time when Boz Scaggs was "LOWDOWN", Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids asked "DID YOU BOOGIE WITH YOUR BABY", Boston had "MORE THAN A FEELING", The Bee Gees told us to "LOVE SO RIGHT" and Rick Dees told us of a "DISCO DUCK" plus so much more.

COMING ATTRACTIONS.....

2016 is looking to be a great year for releases.

Shout Factory has announced THE DUNWICH HORROR (1970), and MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (1972). No street date has yet been announced.

Shout has also announced they will be releasing THE VINCENT PRICE COLLECTION VOL. 3 which includes MASTER OF THE WORLD, TOWER OF LONDON, DIARY OF A MADMAN, CRY OF THE BANSHEE and AN EVENING OF EDGAR ALLEN POE. No street date has been announced.

Lastly, Kino has announced they will release the 1953 sci-fi classic THE MAGNETIC MONSTER. I have no street date on this yet either. All of these films will be available on Blu-ray.

RIP CHARLES HERBERT 1948-2015

Charles Herbert, a child actor who appeared in such genre classics as "13 GHOSTS" died of a heart attack on Halloween day. He was 66.

Herbert was a fixture in a lot of films we monster kids saw growing up. I first remember seeing him in "THE FLY" with Vincent Price.

He also appeared in such films as "BOY AND THE PIRATES", "COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK" and many more.

RAMBLINGS.....

Well Halloween has come and gone. I actually managed to watch a few movies I hadn't seen for a while including such gems as ISLAND OF TERROR, CASTLE OF BLOOD, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD , FANGS OF THE LIVING DEAD and a few others.

Now it is time to go thru all the releases so far this year and ran them from 50 to number 1. That is a very time consuming job as there have been hundreds of movies released this year to Blu-ray and DVD including many that haven't ever been available here in the US in digital media form.

So far 2015 has been a good year for releases in all genres and there have been a few standouts of course. My Top 50 listings will begin on Dec. 4th and end on Jan 1st. I look forward to this every year as it is the one thing on this blog that generates the most response.

HERO OF ROME 1964 (MILL CREEK)

A pretty interesting sword and sandal film.

Gordon Scott stars in this little gem about the people of ancient Rome who oust their despised king and declare their city a republic.

Scott is Mucius, a Roman general who must stop two men who are plotting to take the city back again and rule it with an iron fist.

This story is somewhat unique as it takes place before Christ and Caesar which most of these film don't. There is plenty of intrigue and action to keep fans of the genre interested and Scott is always entertaining to watch.

The print quality is ok for Mill Creek and not really a distraction.

THE ONE AND ONLY 1978 (OLIVE) BLU-RAY

This obscure little gem comes to Blu-ray courtesy of Olive.

Henry Winkler stars as Andy Schmidt, a young man with a passion for performing like nobody else. He craves for adulation from people and while in college he also falls for a young woman played by Kim Darby.

They eventually marry, much to the dismay of her parents. They move to New York and Andy cannot get an acting job because of his over acting, so one day he runs into a midget named Milton Miller (Herve Villechaize) who introduces Andy to the world of Pro Wrestling.

Andy finds the fame he adores in the squared circle and after many characters, he eventually becomes "The Lover" and a big star that he always wanted.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! Winkler gives a great performance and so does Darby. Their relationship is tumultuous but finally settles down. This is a typical boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl story. It's told with a very comedic passion rarely seen in movies.

The Andy character is much like me in my younger days. I always wanted to perform so I went into making movies, acting in them and that's how the character of "El Zappato" was born. I loved the wrestling business and fully understand Winkler's motives for doing what he does in the film.

Carl Reiner handles the directing job with his usual skill and care and this movie really hits home for me. The rest of the cast includes Gene Saks, Harold Gould, Polly Holliday and Ed Begley, Jr.
