A MAN CALLED DJANGO 1971 (TIMELESS)

Another great Spaghetti western....

Anthony Steffen stars as Django who is trying to find out who raped and killed his wife. He discovers a convicted killer knows who killed his wife so he frees him and the two go towards a revenge filled destiny.

This is a very violent film with lots of bloodshed and gun battles and some light comedy thrown in for good measure. Excellent widescreen presentation with great colors. If you like westerns you will enjoy this.

X FROM OUTER SPACE 1965 (CRITERION)

AAB Gamma come in please....AAB Gamma...come in.....AAB Gamma....

So begins one of the most ludicrous and fun Japanese monster movies I have ever seen. A spaceship brings a spore back from space and it grows into a giant monster called Guilala which is a combination of lizard and chicken.

The monster is pretty cool and the action never lets up once it begins. It's nice to see Criterion releasing this. This was Shochiku's first movie and it really made money and so the company made three more horror thrillers.

If you like off the wall Japanese horror and sci-fi you should check out the Eclipse 37 series from Criterion. Highly recommended!!

BIRTHDAY WISHES TO....

WARLOCK MOON 1973 (SHRIEK SHOW)

I admit I have always liked this film.

I first saw this on Bob Wilkins Creature Features in San Francisco way back in the early 80's and fell in love with it.

A young man played by Joe Spano takes a young woman played by Laurie Walters to an abandoned Spa and soon find themselves stalked by what could be cannibals. This is one bizarre film that really keeps a person guessing until the end, which pulls the old double switcheroo.

All of the leads play their roles well and you gotta love Edna MacAfee as the old woman who actually lives at the spa. Many have been too harsh on reviews of this film, but I am a big fan of it and really loved the ending when I first saw it. Highly Recommended independent horror.

LA BRUJA 1954 (PHOENIX)

Interesting little Mexican film.

A doctor invents a formula that makes a hideous witch beautiful so he may use her to gain revenge on the men who killed his daughter. Lilia del Valle stars as the Witch and after she takes the potion she is very beautiful.

Ramon Gay is the hero who actually falls in love with the witch, only to find what she really is. This is Spanish language with no subtitles, but you really don't need them. A fun and good film for an evening's entertainment. Rare and unusual.

AMERICAN TOP 40 THE 70'S

This weeks edition of AT 40 the 70's is from 12/25/1971. This is a special Christmas countdown show with the 40 biggest Christmas hits of all time. In this program you'll hear such Christmas songs as "Little St. Nick" by the Beach Boys, "Home For The Holidays" by Perry Como, "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Bobby Sox & The Blue Jeans, "Winter Wonderland" by Darlene Love and many, many more. A rare program. Listen to it on WMGN 98.1 from Madison, WI on Saturday evening at 8pm Mountain time.

DARK KNIGHT RISES 2012 (WARNER)

One of the better contemporary films made.

Christian Bale returns a Bruce Wayne/Batman who must battle Bane, who has come to Gotham City to take over. Bane is easily the most powerful enemy Batman has ever had to face.

The action is fast paced and all of the cast do good jobs in their respective roles, and I have to admit Tom Hardy as Bane and Anne Hathaway as Selina/Catwoman steal the show. I always have liked Catwoman and hands down Hathaway bring a different kind of sexuality to the role.

No fan of the Batman series will want to miss this film. Recommended!!

TERROR BY NIGHT 1946 (TREELINE)

Basil Rathbone again plays Sherlock Holmes.

In this very well made Universal effort Holmes and Watson are on a train bound for Edinburgh and trying to solve a murder and a the case of a stolen gem called "The Star Of Rhodesia.

Nigel Bruce is Watson and Dennis Hoey returns as Inspector Lastrade, Alan Mowbray is Duncan Bleet a very good friend of Watson's that is also involved in the case and Skelton Knaggs is a thief.

One of the best of the long series of films featuring Holmes and Watson. Recommended!!

GOKE THE BODY SNATCHER FROM HELL 1969 (CRITERION)

What a great movie from Japan.

A plane crashes and the survivors soon find themselves stalked by blob like aliens who turn their victims into blood sucking vampires.

This is an exceptional film in my opinion. Some of the acting is a little over the top, but the theme of mankind being one of the cruelest races in the universe and needing to be wiped out is tops.

This is one of four films from Shochiku studios in the 60's. Criterion has chosen to highlight these films in Eclipse Series 37. The print is prestine and is 2.24 to 1 aspect ration. If you like Japanese horror then this is a real treat for you. It has only been released on VHS here in the states many years ago and had several airings on TCM, but this is the best it has ever looked. Recommended!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO.....

Benny Andersson is 66.

TOP 40 DVD RELEASES OF 2012 PART 2

Here is the second part of my list of the 40 best releases of 2012.....

30. Girl In Room 2A (Mondo Macabro) Strange little giallo involving the torture and killing of several women and starring the luscious Rosalba Neri.
29. Elvira's Movie Macabre: Wild Women (EONE) Four episodes of her Tv show that ran for a year in 2010-2011 includes 2 never before seen episodes. The movies are "Wasp Woman". "Untamed Women", "Wild Women Of Wongo" and "Hercules And The Captive Women". This is a fun and well made set for any collector.
28. Supershark (Retromedia) John Schneider stars in this Fred Olen Ray film about a huge prehistoric shark that can also walk on land on fly!! Silly, but fun and enjoyable on an entertaining level.
27. The Boogens (Olive) Finally this great little 1980 horror thriller about hideous fanged monsters living underground sees the light of day thanks to Olive. Rebecca Balding stars.
26. Face Of Fu Manchu (Warner Archive) The first Fu Manchu film starring Christopher Lee finally makes it to DVD from Warner Archive. He is attempting to take over the world and actually kills over 3000 people in this film alone!! Great wide screen print.
25. Lethal Ladies 2 (Shout Factory) A terrific collection of three films from the Roger Corman Stable. "The Arena" starring gorgeous Pam Grier and Margaret Markov, "Fly Me" starring Pat Anderson and "Cover Girl Models". These three rare little films finally see light from Shout as they continue to release little gems like this from the Roger Corman library.
24. Elvira's Movie Macabre: Giant Monsters (EONE) Four more episodes from the TV show hosted by the always sexy and funny Elvira. This set contains "Attack Of The Giant Leeches", Monster From A Prehistoric Planet", "Teenagers from Outer Space" and "Giant Gila Monster." This is a must for Elvira fans.
23. Sand Sharks (Phase Four Films) Corin Nemic and sexy Brooke Hogan star in this film about sharks who actually swim under the sand and eat people. Good premise and this was Brooke Hogan's first film and it's directed by Mark Atkins. I think Brooke is hotter than hell and this is her first of two movies in this survey.
22. Bigfoot (Cheezy) John Carradine stars in this low budget film about bigfoot monsters capturing women for breeding!! Joi Lansing also stars and that makes this a MUST for fans like me. They simply don't make films like this anymore.
21. Tales That Witness Madness (Olive) Once again a rare Paramount film is released by Olive. Donald Pleasence is a doctor who runs an asylum and several horror tales are told about the inmates. Joan Collins also stars.

Next week the survey continues....

WITCHMAKER 1969 (SINISTER CINEMA)

One of the best movies of it's kind.

Alvy Moore (Hank Kimball on Green Acres) is a psychic investigator looking into the murders of several beautiful young women in the Lousiana swamps. He and his party stumble onto a horror more than they ever bargained for.

It seems that a with coven is attempting to recruit a 13th member and they will stop at nothing to obtain her. This is an excellent movie produed by Moore and another actor, L.Q. Jones. The team later made the wonderful film entitled "Brotherhood Of Satan.

Highly Recommended thriller also starring Anthony Eisley, gorgeous Thordis Brandt, Sue Bernard, John Lodge, Shelby Grant and Robin Millan. The print from Sinister is an verl pleasing 2.35 to 1 aspect ratio.
