Believe it or not this was the first time I had ever seen this movie.
This is, or course based on the book by H. Rider Haggard and was remade in 1965 by Hammer Films.
A man named Leo Vincey (Randolph Scott) arrives at his dying uncle's house and is told a strange story about a land his ancestor visited 500 years before, and that it might be the key to eternal life.
Vincey, after listening to his Uncle (Samuel S. Hinds) decides, along with a friend of his Uncle, Horace Holly (Nigel Bruce) to go in search of this strange land.
Along th way they pick up a young woman named Tanya Dugmore (Helen Mack) who is the daughter of a man whom the two men meet during their journey. His greed for gold causes an avalanche that kills everyone but Vincey, Holly and Dugmore.
The three make their way into a cave and from there they discover a strange underground kingdom ruled by "She, who must be obeyed" (Helen Gahagan).
She trie=s to convince Leo that he is her long lost love come back after 500 years and that he must bathe in the flame of eternal life like she has so they can forever be together.
Vincey has fallen for Tanya and he wants no part of She and her world of terror. This is a very well made film by the people who brought you "King Kong". Even several of the sets from that film are used, to great effect.
I liked this move and if you haven't seen it, don't be like me and wait over 50 years to watch it.
