Walter Pidgeon stars as Admiral Harriman Nelson, the creator of a super submarine called The Seaview.
During a test of how the Seaview works the Van Allen Belt around the Earth catches fire and threatens to burn the entire planet to a cinder. Nelson takes the Seaview out to sea against UN orders in an attempt to fire a missile into the belt at an exact time to try and put out the "sky fire".
His second in command, Lee Crane (Robert Sterling) is somewhat opposed to the mission, but will do as ordered by Nelson. The movie focuses on the strain this kind of mission puts on the crew of the sub. This is an interesting direction for a movie like this to take, but don't get me wrong, you have plenty of monsters and other plot elements thrown in as well.
On their way to the site to launch the missile the Seaview must get thru a dangerous mine field, fight a a giant squid, is attacked by a giant octopus and then by UN subs intent on stopping them.
Allen handles the acting chores in his usual flawless style and when you see this and then the TV show you see a lot of differences, yet both are very similar.
The Blu-ray presentation is gorgeous and not to be missed. The rest of the cast for this great films includes Barbara Eden, Joan Fontaine, Peter Lorre, Michael Ansara, Frankie Avalon, Regis Toomey and Henry Daniell.
This is a highly recommended Blu-ray that is a must for your collection.
