Phil Karlson directed this excellent example of the genre of film noir. Richard Conte stars as Eddie Rico, a man who used to work in the crime rackets, but who has settled down with his wife and a legit cleaning business.
His two brothers have not left the syndicate and one day Eddie receives a call to travel to Miami to talk with crime boss Sid Kubik (Larry Gates). He does and discovers that one of his brothers is missing and the other was a trigger man in a high profile killinmg.
Eddie goes in search of his brother named Johnny (James Darren) and finds him marriedx to a young woman who is expecting a child any day. Eddie pleads with Johnny to come back with him and get out of the syndicate, and learns that Johnny has given up the crime business and now wants to go legit.
Eddie believes his other brother Gino (Paul Picerni) is in St. Louis, and therin lies the double cross from gangster Kubik that sends the movie into overdrive.
Both Johnny and Gino are killed and is appears that Eddie is next on the list, and so he hatches a plot to get baxck at Kubik and destroy his empire.
Tis is a tough and brutal film that really hits home some of the time. The actors give it their all, and the movie will hold your attention. Conte is always a treat to watch.
I can't see anyone not liking this film. It's got everything a film noir should have...tough gangsters..innocent victims...dark and moody photography and a pretty downbeat ending.
The rest of the cast includes Dianne Foster, Kathryn Grasnt, Argentina Brunetti, Paul Dubov, Lamont Johnson and William Phipps. Highly Recommended film.
