Klaus Kinski is Count Dracula who bears a curse of not being able to grow old and die.He is an ugly, pathetic creature that has a curse no man can understand.
He wishes to move to England and move he does after trapping Jonathan Harker in his castle and leaving. He brings with him thousands of rats an a plague which decimates the small town of Varna.
Kinski is excellent in the role of the vampire and he closely resembles the Count from the 1922 silent version. As the story unfolds it becomes very familiar, which isn't a bad thing. Isabelle Ajani is Lucy Harker who uses her power of love to destroy the vampire in a truly unsettling ending.
Director Werner Herzog throws the audience a small curve at the end with the character of Jonathan Harker now a vampire himself and riding off in the distance.
The film is beautiful in Blu-ray and I cannot recommend it enough. I had never had the opportunity to see this film before, and it was a treat. Don't be turned off because it's a Herzog film.
