A female singer named Mavis Marlowe (Constance Dowling) is seeing several men and while her husband pines to have her back. Her husband Martin (Dan Duryea) is an alcoholic and is usually in a state of drunken stupor.
One night Mavis is murdered and the police arrest a man named Kirk Bennett (John Phillips) who happened to find her body and never called the police, but was seen leaving by Mavis' housekeeper.
Kirk's wife Catherine (June Vincent) does not believe her husband is a killer and she enlists the aid of Martin to help her prove it. They form a musical duo while working undercover in a nightclub owned by a shady character named Marko (Peter Lorre).
They slowly put together a plan, but are soon derailed by Marko and the police. It's a race against time as Kirk is to face execution for the murder.
The real killer is identified and it was quite a good little twist. This is a very dark film noir directed by Roy William Neill who also helmed the Sherlock Holmes films for Universal.
My wife found this Blu-ray for me and it's a great film, and yes she and I watched it together and she loved it. No film noir fan should miss it. The rest of the cast includes Broderick Crawford, Wallace Ford and Hobart Cavanaugh.
